Village of St. Venera

Santa Venera is a village located in the central region of Malta between Birkirkara and Hamrun and has a population of about eight thousand people.
The history of this village goes back to the Punic period as tombs in which various burials were found, date back to some 500 years before Christ.
Although the area of Santa Venera is located in the central part of Malta, it is known that sea from the Grand Harbour and that of Marsamxett would have entered much further inland than we know it today. This means that sea water from the Msida side would continue to flow into the valley. This shows us that in prehistoric times the sea could easily reach inland below the Santa Venera area. Thus the land which today is called Santa Venera, had the sea adjoining it.
One of the best known monuments in this locality are the Wignacourt Aqueducts. These aqueducts were built between 1611-1615 by Grand Master Wignacourt as a means of transporting water from Victoria to Valletta using gravitational force.
In Santa Venera we also find the house of Casa Leoni, a palace dating back to 1730, as well as one of the largest Public Gardens in Malta, the Romeo Romano garden. This 'secret garden' in the middle of a densely populated area dates back to the 18th century and was originally part of Casa Leoni's garden complex.
