Village of Sliema

Sliema, located on Malta's northeast coast, is a town with a population exceeding 20,000, and its name means 'peace, comfort.' Originating as a tranquil fishing village across Marsamxett Harbour from Valletta, it began its transformation in 1855 with the opening of the Our Lady Star of the Sea ("Stella Maris") church, eventually becoming a parish in 1878. Sliema is marked by several Catholic churches, including those dedicated to Jesus of Nazareth, Our Lady of the Sacred Heart, Our Lady of Mount Carmel, Stella Maris, and Pope Gregory I.

The town's rapid development in the late 19th century turned it into a sought-after summer resort. Today, it stands as a major residential and commercial hub, celebrated for shopping, bars, dining, and a lively café culture. The Sliema Front, a scenic promenade, is a popular spot for jogging, walking, and socializing during the summer.

Sliema, Malta's most densely populated town, is renowned for its rocky beaches, water sports, hotels, and the famous Strand, offering panoramic views and hosting August fireworks displays. Its history encompasses the Knights of Malta period, the British era with notable fortifications, and the impact of World War II. The town has witnessed significant modern development, with Victorian and art nouveau houses replaced by contemporary structures. Notable remnants include Belvedere Terrace's traditional houses with Maltese balconies.

During the British era, Sliema saw the construction of fortifications, sea water distilleries, and barracks. The town bore the brunt of Axis bombings in 1941 during the Second World War Siege of Malta, resulting in civilian casualties. In recent decades, intensive development has transformed Sliema, replacing Victorian houses with modern apartment buildings along Tower Road. The upgraded promenade remains a popular leisure spot, especially during warm summer nights, and shopping is centered around the Ferries and Tigne Point shopping mall. The town's history, combining ancient origins and modern vibrancy, positions Sliema as a key coastal resort in Malta.
