Parish Church of the Holy Trinity in Marsa

For centuries Marsa formed part of the Parish of St George, Qormi.

With the start of the new project of Portu Novu (New Port) in 1859, the inner part of the Grand Harbour saw an influx of workers and their families.

The then Archbishop of Malta  Mgr Pietro Pace soon noted the need for a church to serve the needs of the community.

However it would take till 20 October 1909 for the foundation stone of the church, dedicated to the Holy Trinity, to be laid.

The building of the Holy Trinity Church in Marsa was financed by Chev Lorenzo Balbi and his wife Maria Carmela, a couple from Valletta, on the advice of the bishop, as the people of the area could ill-afford to build their own church.

The church was designed by Architect Giovanni Domenico Debono, and the Master builder was Michael Mifsud.

Construction took 2 years and 9 months to be completed and was ready on 25 May 1912.

The architectural style is Renaissance, with high marble columns, arcades, and flat panels in the ceiling.

On 12 April 1913, the church was declared a Parish, and on April 19 it officially opened its doors - on the day Malta hosted the International Eucharistic Congress.

The parish church was entrusted to the care of the Capuchin Friars.

The church and the main marble altar were consecrated on 19 April 1917 by the Archbishop of Malta Mgr Mauro Caruana O.S.B.
